ARTZ-1An Arts and Dementia Mentoring Initiative

Do you ever wish that the voices of people living with dementia and the people that love them were better heard by their care providers and communities?

ARTZ@Jefferson is a new award-winning teaching paradigm. Medical students learn what it means to live with dementia from the experts: those living with dementia and their care partners. In 2016, ARTZ Philadelphia ( piloted a new course for medical students at Thomas Jefferson University called ”ARTZ @ Jeff,” in which people living with dementia and their care partners mentor students at Jefferson. ARTZ Philadelphia received the 2017 Family Caregiver Alliance’s Rosalinde Gilbert Innovations in Alzheimer’s Disease Caregiving award for “ARTZ @ Jeff.”

“This program has brought JOY to my life at a time when I had given up on having any JOY…. I now believe that the experience of Paul's illness has meaning and a purpose for me.” ~D. C., mentor and care partner

“It’s difficult to have meaningful communication that we can share anymore. Looking at and talking about the art we were able to talk like a couple again. My wife really liked her student and I felt that she was really helping him and contributing to others again.” ~M. S., mentor and care partner

“I have taken so much away from this course just by learning from my mentor. Words don’t describe the feelings and emotions that one has at the end of this course.” ~1st year medical student, Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Jefferson
