Harvard Magazine announces "Arts and Humanities Initiative at Harvard Medical School"

The Art of Healing

In the Harvard Magazine article, The Art of Healing, Zara Zhang writes about the new Arts and Humanities Initiative at Harvard Medical School.

Recognizing the gap between medicine and the arts and humanities, a group of self-organized HMS community members have been working since 2011 toward building an official program. David Jones, director of the new Arts and Humanities Initiative says the, "many people at HMS have skills and interests in the arts and humanities, “but they do it in addition to being a doctor, not as part of being a doctor."

In June, Harvard Medical School recognized the arts and humanities as an official Initiative. The leadership of the Initiative are making a case that interests in the arts and humanities are an important part of being a doctor, and there is no reason to be shy about it. Dr. Jones, MD, PhD, explained that the new initiative will attempt to change this impression that medicine is an all-consuming occupation that leaves no room for artistic interests by conveying the message that these interests can be an important part of a physician's identity, and should be appreciated.
